Australia’s Coral Reefs: Hundreds of New Species Discovered
Hundreds of new kinds of animal species, including 130 colourful corals, have been discovered.
The extraordinary creatures were found by researchers systematically exploring waters off two islands on the Great Barrier Reef and a reef off northwestern Australia.
Dr Ian Poiner, chief executive of the Australian Institute of Marine Sciences, that led the research, said: “Corals face threats ranging from ocean acidification, pollution and overfishing. Only by establishing a baseline of biodiversity and following through with later censuses can people know the impact of those threats and find clues to mitigate them.”
