Arctic Sea Ice Recovery Underway – Updated

Watts Up With That: Arctic sea ice now 28.7% higher than this date last year – still rallying Ice Reality Check: Arctic Ice Now 31.3% Over Last Year, plus Scientists Counter Latest Arctic ‘Record’ Warmth Claims as ‘Pseudoscience’

UAH Globally Averaged Satellite-Based Temperature (Jan. 1979 – Sept. 2008)

When one takes into consideration that the cooling from the Mt. Pinatubo eruption and the warming from the 1997-98 El Nino event were not part of any underlying long-term trend, we can imagine that globally-averaged temperatures were flat from 1990 until 2000, then there was a brief warming until about 2002, after which temperatures have [...]

For How Long will the Current Grand Maximum of Solar Activity Persist?

There is a new paper ‘in press’ in GRL by J.A. Abreu, J. Beer, F. Steinhilber, S.M. Tobias,  and N.O. Weiss, entitled: ‘For how long will the current grand maximum of solar activity persist?’ The Abstract states: Understanding the Sun’s magnetic activity is important because of its impact on the Earth’s environment. The sunspot record [...]

False causality between Atlantic hurricane activity fluctuations and seasonal lower atmospheric wind anomalies

A new paper has been published in GRL by K L Swanson entitled: ‘False causality between Atlantic hurricane activity fluctuations and seasonal lower atmospheric wind anomalies.’ The Abstract states: Statistical studies suggest a link between anomalies in seasonally averaged lower atmospheric dynamical fields and Atlantic hurricane activity. Here we show that lower atmospheric seasonal wind [...]

US Hurricane Counts Significantly Related to Solar Activity

There is a new GRL paper by Elsner and Jagger entitled: ‘United States and Caribbean tropical cyclone activity related to the solar cycle.’ The Abstract states: The authors report on a finding that annual U.S hurricane counts are significantly related to solar activity. The relationship results from fewer intense tropical cyclones over the Caribbean and Gulf [...]

A Role for Atmospheric CO2 in Preindustrial Climate Forcing?

An interesting new paper has been published in PNAS that relies on modelling of climate forcing by CO2, and stomatal index as a proxy for atmospheric CO2 levels. This supports the doubts cast by a minority of scientists on the accuracy of atmospheric CO2 data derived from ice cores. The paper is entitled: A role for atmospheric [...]

Multi-Decadal Variability of Atlantic Hurricane Activity: 1851-2007

Another new study has been published that fails to support alarmism about hurricane activity and ‘global warming.’ The ‘in press’ paper is entitled: ‘Multi-decadal variability of Atlantic hurricane activity: 1851-2007,’ by Petr Chylek and Glen Lesins,  Journal of Geophysical Research-Atmospheres (doi:10.1029/2008JD010036) (2008). The Abstract states:  An analysis of Atlantic hurricane data (HURDAT), using a hurricane activity index [...]

UK Takes Another Step down the Road to Energy Poverty and Climate Canutism

The UK’s failing prime minster Gordon Brown continues to make poor judgements and decisions. If recalling disgraced former cabinet minister Peter Mendelson to the government wasn’t bad enough, a new department of ‘Energy and Climate’ has been announced during the cabinet reshuffle. The hapless BBC reported the news as ‘Greens welcome new climate dept.’ At [...]

Surface Temperature Cooling due to Land Use Change

Another paper has been published which demonstrates how land use change can have a bigger effect on climate locally than the claimed influence of increased greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. The paper is: Campra, P., M. Garcia, Y. Canton, and A. Palacios-Orueta, 2008: Surface temperature cooling trends and negative radiative forcing due to land use [...]

Winds are Dominant Cause of Greenland and West Antarctic Ice Sheet Losses

Two new studies summarised in a news article in Science magazine point to wind-induced circulation changes in the ocean as the dominant cause of the recent ice losses through the glaciers draining both the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets, not ‘global warming.’ The two stuides referred to are: ‘Acceleration of Jakobshavn Isbræ triggered by warm subsurface ocean [...]
