Americans were today shivering as bitter arctic winds caused temperatures to plunge to record-breaking levels in many parts of the vast country.

-40c is seriously cold. Oc is freezing and we had a number of days recently in the UK during the recent cold snap when the temperature did not get above 0c.
+40c is very warm, and has never been reached on the UK mainland to my knowledge. +40c is a height of summer mediterrian temperature.
So -40C is by comparison that far away from freezing. My deep freeze keeps food at -17C
I hope President Obama knows what he is doing and looks beyond the academic spin
