Impact of Micro Wind Turbines on Birds to be Probed

The impact small wind turbines placed on homes and business could have on birds and bats is to be studied by researchers at Stirling University.

The study will look at the number of the animals killed by micro-turbines, why they may fly towards the machines and possible effects on nesting.

strategicly placed ‘mini turbines’ are one way to keep woodpeckers away from your house. Provided the blades are shiny, the flickering is a distraction for the bird. They interpret it as a threat maybe. Anyhow it works. Not that I’m trying to encourage the greenies to protest coal generators or something.
It’s just that we had a problem with a woodpecker, with the emphasis on had.
Sort of boggling me that the uni types are doing a study over well trod territory. Must be a make work type project.

    Paul,
Your name carries more gravity then most when it comes to debunking climate change.
“Climate Research News” gets lost in a sea of climate entries in my favorite list.
Have you considered renaming the blog “Paul Biggs Climate Research News”?

I confuse the place with some Al Gore groupie gristmill type institute. – the main thing that drew me into Jennifer Marohasy, the main thing that brings me to most of the blogs I read regularly is trust. Paul Biggs is a name I trust. thnk about it.

Bats would never hit a wind turbine— there sonar is far to good and they are far too agile— magnificient animals to watch.
Most small birds are woodland or hedge row/ garden birds— again they will not be any where near a wind turbine ( this would also apply to BATS as well)

i don’t think its about bats hitting the turbine, but more about the turbine hitting the bats. Generally bats fly horizontally, and the turbine blades rotate so it would come up or down upon a bat vertically. A bit like even through your vision is quite good, you probably wouldn’t see a piano falling on your head.

Anyway whats this got to do with woodpeackers?
