   This is a very disturbing story. How many millions of dollars in grants did Phil Jones receive?

   $22.6 million. Actually, I’m not sure if this story is true, as Jones seems to keep changing his story about whether data was deleted or not. Most of the raw data prior to 1980 may be available from NASA or NCDC.

   The more I read about global warming, the more sceptical I become so when I read the leaked emails from the CRU back in November I was outraged at what seems to be a deliberate and concerted effort to suppress data and prevent scientific enquiry. I emailed the FOI commissioner to complain and have just received the following response:

   Thank you for your enquiry dated 16 December 2009 regarding the disclosure of e-mails from the CRU at the University of East Anglia. I am sorry for the delay in contacting you, and for any problems you had using our online forms. We have had some technical problems with these forms which prevented us responding as quickly as we would have hoped to.

   In your correspondence you raise concerns that the University of East Anglia may not be complying with it obligations under the Freedom of Information Act, and ask us to investigate.

   The Information Commissioner is a UK independent supervisory authority reporting directly to the UK Parliament. In regard to this matter the Commissioner enforces and oversees the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) which gives the right to access recorded information held by public authorities and the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (EIR) which gives the right to access recorded environmental information held by public authorities.

   Section 77 of the FOIA and regulation 19 of the EIR make it an offence for anyone to alter, deface, block, erase, destroy or conceal any recorded information held by the public authority with the intention of preventing the disclosure of that information, where the authority has received a request for this information, and the applicant would have been entitled to be provided with that information under the legislation. Where an applicant believes that the disclosure of the information they have requested has been deliberately prevented in this way then they can complain to us. The right to complain to the Information Commissioner under both the FOIA and the EIR is given under section 50 of the FOIA. This right only applies to someone in regard to a request they have made and we are thus not in a position to address a complaint from someone regarding another person’s request.

   The role of the Information Commissioner is also to promote good practice in relation to the legislation we oversee and we can confirm that we are taking this matter seriously and we are investigating the issues that the release of these e-mails raises.

   So, although the CRU have broken the law, I can’t complain about it because it wasn’t me who made the original request. I suppose by now who ever did make the original request will have complained but I thought I’d post this just in case! The way the global warming hysterics are twisting science and manipulating the public makes me sick so I really hope that someone can use the FOI legislation to teach them a lesson.
